Why this speed test is different
Many speed tests use a nearby server, sometimes within or very close to your ISP's network. InternetSpeed.online transfers real data between your device and remote servers in major data centers.
This helps measure performance beyond the fastest possible route inside or close to your ISP's network.
VPN Performance Testing
We continuously test paid and free VPN services using the same speed-testing technology used by InternetSpeed.online. Results are based on real measurements, not advertised speeds.
VPN providers cannot buy a higher position in our rankings.

How We Test VPN Speed
We run at least five measurements per day on Windows 11 over a wired symmetric 1 Gbps fiber connection. We use WireGuard or a comparable protocol and manually select VPN server locations to keep comparisons as consistent as possible between providers. Rankings are based on median download speed from a rolling 7-day window.
Read Our Testing MethodologyTesting VPNs Against Network Blocking
VPN performance is only useful if the VPN can connect in the first place. We also test VPN services from networks where VPN traffic is actively restricted.
A VPN passes the test only when it successfully connects and internet traffic continues to work through the VPN.
What Can Affect Your Internet Speed?
Internet speed can vary between tests. Your ISP, network congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, device performance, router limitations, server distance and other active traffic can all affect the result.
For the most consistent measurement, use a wired connection when possible and pause large downloads, cloud backups and other bandwidth-heavy activity during the test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the InternetSpeed.online speed test free?
Yes. You can run the internet speed test without creating an account.
What does the speed test measure?
The test measures download speed, upload speed and ping between your connection and an InternetSpeed.online test server.
Can I choose a test server?
Yes. Automatic mode is recommended for most users, while Advanced Settings lets you select a test server and configure up to four parallel connections.
How are VPN speeds measured?
VPN services are tested automatically at least five times per day on the same Windows 11 system and wired symmetric 1 Gbps fiber connection. Rankings are based on median download speed from a rolling 7-day window.
Can VPN companies pay for a higher ranking?
No. Ranking positions are determined by measured performance and are not sold to VPN providers.
Does a network-blocking test guarantee that a VPN will work everywhere?
No. VPN blocking varies by country, network, provider, protocol and time. Our results describe what worked in the tested environment at the time of testing.
