Which VPNs work in Vietnam in 2026?

Proton VPN, NordVPN and Windscribe have reports of use from Vietnam. Cloudflare WARP can also help with access to blocked sites, but does not let you choose another country. Results depend on your internet provider and the site you want to reach.

This research is based on public material online, not our own tests in Vietnam. For VPN availability, we consider information from the last six months.

Which options should you consider?

VPN options for Vietnam
ServiceConfidenceConditions and limitations
Proton VPNMediumRecent reports include Steam downloads with the free plan. Failures have also been reported, including on MobiFone.
NordVPNMediumReported working for browsing and streaming. A working VPN connection does not guarantee access to a particular video service.
WindscribeMediumWorth considering for access to blocked sites. October feedback includes use of free servers; the operator and protocol are unspecified.
Cloudflare WARPMediumAn option for access to blocked sites, with October reports of Steam access on FPT. It does not offer country selection.

What is known about each option?

Proton VPN

Confidence: Medium

Proton VPN is worth considering for access to sites and downloads that your provider restricts. October reports describe using the free plan to download game updates through Steam; earlier reports also describe obtaining a foreign IP address and accessing online services.

It does not work on every connection. A July report describes both the app failing to connect and the Proton website being unavailable on MobiFone; August reports also include a connection failure. The successful accounts do not establish one particular protocol as necessary, so there is no basis for prescribing Stealth to everyone in Vietnam.

NordVPN

Confidence: Medium

NordVPN has several accounts of use from Vietnam, including access to foreign streaming services. The more detailed examples are from May: users describe working connections, with some streaming servers accepted and others rejected. Vietnamese-language discussions within the research window also include positive accounts of using the service.

These reports support considering NordVPN, but do not establish current reliability on a named Vietnamese operator. Reports of unavailable content need a separate interpretation: a streaming service or social network can restrict content even when the VPN itself is connected.

Windscribe

Confidence: Medium

Windscribe is another option for everyday site access. An October account in a Vietnamese Steam discussion describes good speeds, including on free servers. This adds to an August account of regular use and a separate recommendation for accessing Reddit.

The reports do not establish a particular protocol or confirm reliability on a named operator. They support trying Windscribe for site access, but not a promise of uninterrupted gaming or streaming.

Cloudflare WARP

Confidence: Medium

Cloudflare WARP is worth considering when your aim is to open a site that is unavailable through your normal connection. An October report describes Steam working on FPT with the mode that tunnels both traffic and DNS. Other reports describe restored access, but users also report cases where WARP does not solve the problem or increases latency.

WARP differs from VPN services with a list of countries: you cannot choose a foreign location, and it is not intended to bypass country restrictions. Its DNS-only mode is also different from a VPN connection: it changes how site addresses are resolved without tunnelling the rest of your traffic.

How are VPNs and websites restricted in Vietnam?

Recent reports describe selective restrictions that vary between networks. Steam, Reddit and Medium can be unavailable on one connection and accessible on another. This is not evidence of a nationwide shutdown of all VPN connections.

DNS-related restrictions

Some users regain access after changing their DNS resolver, the service that translates a site name into its network address. This is consistent with interference at the DNS level, although user reports alone cannot establish the exact mechanism.

Restrictions that a DNS change does not resolve

Other users report that changing DNS does not help, while a VPN restores access. Filtering by destination address or connection characteristics could explain this, but the available reports do not distinguish these mechanisms from other network problems. They are not enough to claim that widespread DPI — inspection of traffic to identify and block connections — is currently blocking VPN protocols across Vietnam.

VPN access and website access are different

A VPN provider's website or connection can be unavailable on a particular network. Separately, a website may reject a VPN address or restrict particular content. Failure to open one page does not by itself mean the VPN tunnel has been blocked.

Could your own VPN server help?

Yes, a personal server outside Vietnam can provide another route when a commercial VPN is unavailable. It gives you a separate server address and control over the connection software. Its usefulness still depends on whether your network can reach that server.

WireGuard

A May account describes using WireGuard and Tailscale from Vietnam with a remote exit connection. This supports considering a personal WireGuard server, but the report does not identify the local provider or prove that the same setup still works today. Standard WireGuard does not disguise its traffic.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN is another option for a personal server. We did not find enough recent, detailed reports of its use from Vietnam to recommend it ahead of WireGuard. Its availability needs to be established on the network where you intend to use it.

XRay with VLESS and REALITY

XRay with VLESS and REALITY is a suitable option for a private server with traffic camouflage. REALITY makes the connection resemble ordinary encrypted web traffic and makes it harder to identify through active probing. It is a reasonable choice for Vietnam, where reports also describe working standard WireGuard connections. Traffic camouflage can be useful if a network starts filtering ordinary VPN protocols.

AmneziaWG

AmneziaWG modifies recognisable WireGuard traffic patterns. It is another option for a private server when WireGuard traffic needs camouflage.

Tools for setting up a server

AmneziaVPN and Hiddify can simplify deploying a supported configuration on your own server. Choose the protocol and server first; the installation tool alone does not determine whether the connection will work.

How we researched this

We reviewed English- and Vietnamese-language material published within the last six months, looking for actual use from inside Vietnam and retaining reports of failures. Connections from abroad to a Vietnamese VPN server do not count as evidence of working access from Vietnam.

Medium confidence means there is a basis for considering the option with the limitations described. It is not a guarantee for your connection. Dates refer to published reports and may not be the exact dates on which the connections were used.

Self-hosted recommendations distinguish local connection reports from technical assessments. WireGuard has local usage reports; the recommendation for XRay with REALITY is based on its design and the network conditions described in this research.
