From time to time I face a case where I need to know which internet provider, mobile operator, or VPN provider should I use to get the best internet connection.

Here on this site, I want to get speed test results from different provider networks and VPNs, analyze the data, and then share the results with you.

Speed test info

Now you can check internet speed with two options. First "Test internet speed" button - will run a test that will detect the closest server to you and run a test with 4 parallel threads.

The second option allows you to choose your parameters to run a test.

In all scenarios, your result will be represented as average speed (The data transferred / time left in seconds) in Mbit/s (Mbps).

Any test will download and upload test data for 20 seconds without any limit on bandwidth usage so the total transferred data over a network is unknown.

Internet speed test feature

This speed test measures the speed of downloading/uploading from a remote server that looks like you are trying to download/upload some media files in real life.

Meanwhile, some speed tests on the internet measure the speed of downloading and uploading from servers, which could be running even in your internet provider network. In reality, you will rarely consume data from servers in your local network.

Most likely you will download (or upload) something from one of the big cloud service providers, which have their data centers only in the big cities which are region centers with highly populated areas, not in every city.

What is the maximum speed that could be detected?

All servers for testing have a 2 Gbit/s connection. I have tried to test the internet speed from different locations and it looks like the maximum speed is highly dependent on how far is you from a test server.

For example. When I ran tests from Chicago with the test server located in New York I got 1200 Mbps, and with the test server located in Los Angeles, I Got only 400 Mbps.

When I ran tests from Seattle with the test server located in Los Angeles the maximum speed was 1280 Mbps, and it was much faster than if the test server was in New York when I got 440 Mbps.

The same situation with the test server in Frankfurt, I ran tests from London and got 1280, but tests with this server from Madrid gave me only 640.

What factors could affect your internet speed?

Number of threads, VPN can make your speed faster or slower, network load during the day (morning/day/evening/night), ISP prioritization (throttling) by type of your traffic and over parameters, quality of wi-fi and LTE signals.
